Watch the final hours of Jesus from the eyes of a criminal.

“One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, ‘Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!’ But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ And he said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’”

Below is a short film imagining these final moments through the eyes of the repentant criminal. It was produced by The JESUS Film Project, a nonprofit organization aimed at sharing “Jesus with everyone in his or her own heart language using media tools and movement building strategies.” Donate to the mission and help spread the word.

A new book by Jacob Abshire walking through Philemon with a focus on forgiveness.

You might be surprised to hear that there is a book in the Bible called Philemon. It is a rather short one. You might have brushed right over it a time or two and not even realized it.

Despite its small size, the book is quite colossal, theologically speaking. It instructs us on forgiveness and does so in a unique and practical way. And while it does this, it gently teaches on matters of equality, fellowship, edification and more. Only 25 verses long, it packs 25 chapters worth of divine guidance for us all.

In this book, we will unpack these divinities so that we can think and behave more like our Lord, who is a forgiving God (Ex. 34:6-7). Technically, this book is called a “commentary” on Philemon; however, it has been written in a way that is unlike typical commentaries, which often read like textbooks, focus on individual passages, and have a choppy flow.

The flow of this book is fluid, transitioning from point to point, like topical books do. However, in this book all of the points are posited by scripture. This is a commentary for those who don’t like commentaries. My hope is that you enjoy both the richness of Biblical exposition and the ease of reading, all at the same time.

Get the resolutions and keep them. Available today for purchase.

Many of us make resolutions each year. We resolve to lose weight, exercise more, read more, love more. But rarely do any of us keep those resolutions.

Not so any more.

Today, The Resolutions Poster is made available. Redeem your wall and let it spur you on to good works in Christ. Written by one of America’s greatest theologians, Jonathan Edwards, these 70 resolutions can be an encouraging work in your life as they were to him. As he noted to himself: “Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week.” With these resolutions on your wall, you can too.

Each poster is printed on latex infused matte stock with eco-solvent inks. Therefore, it looks and feels like an original. It appears vintage. The large print is easily readable and very elegant even to hang on the wall of your home, church or office.

These are resolutions you will keep. Literally.

In addition to being a great adorner on your wall, the proceeds of each purchase will go to the work of adorning young men with biblical training. The profits will be used to pay for tuition, books and other educational-related expenses for fellow believers wishing to attend the prestigious Ligonier Academy.

It’s a poster with a purpose. Get yours today.

More information and resources for those who listened to my interview on the Geeks and God podcast.

I would argue that I’m neither a geek or a god. My wife would differ – that is, the part about me not being a geek. I don’t take it personal though. Nor do I consider it demeaning. In fact, I might call it an honor. A geek is defined as one with “eccentric devotion to a particular interest.” Sure, I admit that I fall into this category in one way or another. There is no dishonor there.

I am Geek. There. I said it. But, while you might think me to be a computer or tech or Mac geek, think again. Okay, maybe not again, but think harder. Before I ooh-and-aah at the latest iPhone update, I meditate and tremble before the Lord (Jer. 9:23-24). If I had nothing else but Him, I would have all that I need and my greatest desire.

In some cases, the two run parallel. Not to mean that they compete (because there is no competition), but to mean that I can sometimes delight in both simultaneously. And this is the reason I come to you now. I was recently a guest on the Geeks & God podcast which is aimed at “Helping and encouraging Christian ministries to use technology more effectively in order to spread the Gospel in new and innovative ways.”1

During my interview, I mentioned that I would explain more about the subject in case I was not so clear during the recording. (Trust me, I’m terrible with interviews.) So I plan to elaborate here as well as provide some of my own online resources. Now that my personal motivations and desires are on the table, we can clean it off and start with the topic at hand.

Drum roll please.

Your humble servant would like to introduce to you … The Preacher’s Library.

Sure, those of you who are seasoned Truth411 readers are not surprised at all. I have mentioned the software before. But I suspect that many of you who are reading this are here for the first time. In fact, you were probably steered this way from the Geeks & God web site and are totally new. I welcome you. The drum roll was for you guys.

My introduction above might be the most appropriate introduction for you all. It might only need my typical, social network bio in order to be complete: “Father of three. Husband of one.” That about sums it up. And with that out of the way, let me try to explain what I likely made confusing in the interview.

The Preacher’s Library is free, online personal library software for Christians who wish to easily organize their study.

No, not your office. But your studies themselves. Originally, my idea encompassed more than a personal library as the statement above suggests. My hope is that one day it will be a much more exhaustive tool that Christians use to learn and keep their learnings in a way that will allow them to find them later with ease.

The idea came out of my own need. I am an avid reader and I really learn when I read. On the other hand, I am equally an avid forgetter. I forget what I read and learn. I know that you have had those times when you read something, maybe an poignant statement or a clever argument and you say to yourself, “I need to remember that.” Then, as soon as two days later, you have no idea what it was that you wanted to remember. This is my problem. And The Preacher’s Library was my solution.

Still, as other people used the software, it took on somewhat of a different shape. Some of them wanted to use it as their book loaning software. Others wanted to use it as a virtual rolodex (I picture Albert Mohler’s personal library when I think of that). Others wanted to share with people of similar interests. Each person had a slightly different need. And, wanting to meet their needs, I customized the software to accommodate. And it has been my pleasure.

At the moment, The Preacher’s Library enables you to keep an online listing of your books so that you can manage them and track them in your own location. You can categorize and tag books. You can manage their names, authors, publishers, and more. You can also review and rate them in order to help others make purchasing decisions. You filter and search them. You can add your notes and quotes for later queries. Soon you will be able to syncronize your iBooks and Kindles (notes and titles) and do much more. And in time, it will work like your favorite social network where you can visit with others who are reading the same books as you.

There it is in a nutshell. I did my best to explain. But to be honest, you will not get the full picture until you try it out for yourself. It is free to use and there is no risk. None of your personal information is shared without your consent. So give it a try and let me know what you think. In fact, tell me what you would like to see in it. Maybe I’ll add it in soon!

January 22, 2011 marks the 38th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. On January 3rd, the 112th United States Congress will open with newly elected representatives in the Senate and the House of Representatives joining the incumbents. This is an important opportunity to influence our nation’s leaders on the critical issue of abortion. To coincide with both of these dates, Ligonier will send R.C.Sproul’s Twentieth Anniversary special edition of Abortion: A Rational Look at an Emotional Issue (Reformation Trust Publishing, November 2010) to every Congressional representative.
Jonathan Rourke impersonates CJ Mahaney. If you close your eyes, you'll think it is the man himself.

In the past few annual Resolved Conferences, Jonathan Rourke was asked to impersonate CJ Mahaney. This year, he topped himself doing such an excellent job. The video is quite funny. If you know CJ and have seen him in person or on-demand, you’ll get a deep laugh out of this one. If you close your eyes, you’ll think it is the man himself.

Page CXVI has publicly released their second installment of hymns, appropriately entitled, "Hymns II."

On page 116 of The Magician’s Nephew, a fantasy novel written by the great C.S. Lewis, we read of winsome moment when Aslan, the kingly lion of Narnia, sings a carol by which all of Narnia was created:

“In the darkness something was happening at last. A voice had begun to sing. It was very far away and Digory found it hard to decide from what direction it was coming. Sometimes it seemed to come from all directions at once. Sometimes he almost thought it was coming out of the earth beneath them. Its lower notes were deep enough to be the voice of the earth herself. There were no words. There was hardly even a tune. But it was, beyond comparison, the most beautiful noise he had ever heard. It was so beautiful he could hardly bear it.”

This is where we find the idea behind the name of a modern band with an ancient song list, Page CXVI. In September 2009, they released their first album appropriately titled, “Hymns.” It included the ancient, but long-lived and true, hymns re-imagined with modern-day instruments and arrangements. Of this I am always hesitant, since I cherish these old hymns so much.

Many attempts to recreate these hymns today have fallen short. They more than often sound too immanent and domesticated and less transcendent and sacred. But Page CXVI managed to keep those qualities that make these hymns as powerful as they are.

The song list captured some of our most favored hymns like In Christ Alone, Nothing But the Blood, Solid Rock and a few others (see full list here). Although I’ve found no official reports published online about the sales of this album, my gut feeling is that it did quite well. Many Christians today, who relish the Scriptures and find the deepest comfort in Biblical doctrine, realize the richness of the hymns of old and long to hear them again in a more modern tune. One year ago, we tasted of what that could be like when we heard Hymns.

Today, we will taste it yet again.

Page CXVI’s new album, Hymns II is now available for pre-order and instant digital-download. This is the first of four additional hymn albums to be released over the next 24 months. All downloads include the official chord charts for you to use at your church or event. The song list includes:

How Great Thou Art

Praise to the Lord

Jesus I am Resting, Resting

Rock of Ages

Abide with Me

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Doxology

Those of you who have yet to purchase the first album, can download it for free until May 4th. Follow the band on Twitter at (@pagecxvi) or at their website (pagecxvi.com).
